Despite the fact that today's fashions that move different sectors, from the world of fashion to that of design, have accustomed us to trends that last just the time of an Instagram story, there are trends - often linked to sensations - that are able to survive the inexorable passing of time.

Indeed, it seems that despite the avant-garde and progress dominating our lives, the comfort of sitting in front of a fireplace, enjoying the warmth of the fire in the company of friends or even just a good book, has not yet found a worthy rival. No plasma television, no artifice child of the latest technology, can replace the pleasure of watching a 'real' fire burning in the fireplace.

Stoves and fireplaces: a symbol of hospitality yesterday, but especially today

In the past, the hearth has always represented the sacred centre of the home, a place around which to gather. Even in today's homes, the hearth continues to be a symbol, a meeting and sharing point for family and friends, as well as a furnishing element capable of giving the home a unique, warm and cosy charm and atmosphere. In addition to the gathering and furnishing aspect, many families choose to heat their homes with a fireplace or stove because it is economical compared to the main fuels and environmentally sustainable.

The new trends

Browsing through your social network feeds, you will no doubt have come across photographs of homes furnished in the latest fashion and characterised by extreme minimalism: the diktat of less is more - the dominant philosophy of minimalism - in fact requires that spaces be furnished with the bare minimum. Minimalism is a decorative approach born in the 1960s which, as its name suggests, avoids everything superfluous, enhancing the concept of freedom and space. Hence, there is room for sober lines, a few essential furnishing accessories and delicate colours, the softest shades of which give shape to the only possible contrasts. Although minimalism is one of the persistent trends in interior design, in the post-lockdown period there has been a sudden change of direction in which a desire for warmth dominates, in total contrast to the aseptic appearance envisaged by the aesthetics of minimalism.

By virtue of this return to the past, at the top of the wish list of people who are furnishing their homes is that of inserting a fireplace or stove to give domestic spaces a more relaxing and cosy atmosphere. Moreover, it should be emphasised that such a choice combines the useful with the pleasant in that, besides being aesthetically relevant, a stove or fireplace is a smart way to heat a room - with an eye on bills and the environment.

Stoves and fireplaces: choose the style that suits you

If you too are looking to give a cosier look to your living spaces, choosing a stove or fireplace is undoubtedly the best way to achieve this. Nevertheless, it is necessary that the chosen model reflects the dominant style of the space in order to avoid inconsistencies and unpleasant lapses in style. For both stoves and fireplaces, there are in fact different types of style to choose from: from the more classic aesthetic approach with a more elaborate design and meticulously studied finishes that can make the stove or fireplace a focal point of your home; to the more modern approach that, by virtue of minimalism, presents a cleaner design and elegant aesthetics that are well suited to a contemporary space.

If you have little space available or want to save as much as possible, you can opt for slim stove models that are characterised by a reduced depth; otherwise for built-in fireplaces which, being perfectly integrated into the wall, save even more space and allow for a more minimalist, modern and refined aesthetic result. If, on the other hand, you want to exploit an unused corner, the solution could be a round stove, a shape that is well suited to those corners of the house that are more difficult to use.
